【Abstract】Key to the success of a smart-city future are shared mobility systems. Such systems provide on-demand transportation services, which are desired to be flexible, efficient and clean. In this talk, we examine two separate paths towards large-scale adoption of shared mobility. The first part examines the integrative prospect where shared mobility of passenger cars prevails throughout urban areas for last-mile delivery services. We find that crowdsourcing shared mobility for last-mile deliveries is not as scalable as the conventional truck-only system in terms of the operating cost. However, a transition to this paradigm has the potential for creating economic benefits by reducing the truck fleet size and exploiting additional operational flexibilities. The second part of the talk focuses on electric vehicle (EV) sharing services. Motivated by challenges faced by car2go, which ceased its EV sharing operations in San Diego, California, we develop models to jointly optimize the sites and sizes of charging stations, along with the coupled fleet charging and repositioning operations. After learning from real data sets of car2go’s operations, we find that managing charging process is crucial in alleviating the bottleneck of insufficient charging facility. We also identify EV technologies that help address short-run and long-run challenges in promoting EV sharing.
